Music

Organist, Joe Sentence

Joseph Sentance read music at Trinity College, Dublin and law at Peterhouse, Cambridge. From 1978 to 1995 he was closely associated with the music at the Chapels Royal, H.M.Tower of London, initially as Assistant Organist, then as Master of the Music. He is currently Organist and Director of Music at Sherborne Abbey and divides his time between London and Dorset. He and his wife run the Friday recital series at St Stephen's and work closely with Emma Corke in developing the musical ministry of the church.

Choir Director, Emma Corke

After reading History and Philosophy of Science at Newnham College, Cambridge, Emma Corke's post-graduate studies included the Else Meyer-Lismann Opera Workshop and Federico's Davia's workshops. Operatic roles have included Cenerentola (Rossini), Cherubino and Leonora (Fidelio). She sang in the Oratory choir from 1981 to 1996, and with the BBC Singers between 1982 and 1998. She has frequently sung abroad, especially in France, recording for television as well as radio. She joined the choir of St Stephen's in 1997, becoming Director in 2002.

The Choir

The choir that sings every Thursday for Eucharist at St Stephen Walbrook is a consort of four professional singers. We sing an unaccompanied mass setting, generally of the seventeenth century, and a motet (as well as a congregational hymn). This however is only one aspect of our wide repertoire. On other occasions (and in other places) we sing in operas and oratorios and give recitals, with music ranging from Josquin to Gershwin via Verdi. Some of this finds its way into the church from time to time, for example at weddings. We pride ourselves on our versatility and on being able to reach high standards of performance in anything that we undertake.
